SEREMBAN: Four school boys, who assaulted a junior student, have been grounded from 8pm to 6am for the next two years, besides having to perform 160 hours of community service each.

A Magistrate’s Court here ordered that these four teenagers are not allowed to leave their homes during that time period unless they are accompanied by their parents or guardians.

The community service is to be completed within six months.

Magistrate Intan Syafinaz Roslin also ordered the four friends to be bound over for two years on a good behaviour bond of RM2,000 with one surety each.

Prosecuting officer M. Shanmugavel said the court also directed them to attend counselling sessions at the Welfare Department with their parents.

“The department will have the discretion to decide how many sessions they would have to attend,” he said when met outside the court.

Three of the accused are in Form Four and one is in Form Three. The victim is in Form One.

On May 23, the four teenagers had pleaded guilty to assaulting the 13-year-old boy at SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah hostel around midnight on May 13.

The four were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation for voluntarily causing hurt.

Offenders can be jailed up to one year or fined up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

However, the court only delivered judgment yesterday to allow the tabling of probation reports by the Welfare Department.

The victim’s father had prior to this told reporters that his son did not inform him about the assault at first for fear of being attacked again.

However, the victim called his older brother a day later and confided about it.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that 20 former Mara Junior Science College students in Merbok near Sungak Petani, Kedah, pleaded guilty at a Magistrate’s Court to a charge of injuring their schoolmate in October 2020.

All the students, aged between 18 and 19, made the plea after the charge against them was read out before magistrate Nadhirah Abdul Rahim.

The court set Aug 10 for probation reports on the students before sentencing.

All the students, then aged between 16 and 17, were jointly charged with intentionally causing injury to a 16-year-old student at the school hostel area between 12.30am and 2am on Oct 17, 2020.

They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Act, which provides imprisonment of up to a year, or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both if found guilty.

The court granted bail of RM1,000 each with one surety for all the students.

Deputy Public Prosecutor was S. Preeya while lawyer Nurliyana Mohd Radzi represented all accused.
