KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 23 men were detained during a traffic operation in the city for driving while being intoxicated.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said the drivers, aged between 23 and 48, were detained in the operation in the city centre, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Genting Klang, Duke Highway and MRR2 from Friday until yesterday.

“The blood alcohol level of the drivers surpassed the permitted limit. We are investigating under Section 45(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said in a statement.

Eight motorcycle riders aged between 16 and 19 were also detained for riding dangerously and performing stunts, he added.

“We also detained a 33-year-old man suspected of riding a stolen motorcycle while another man was detained for obstructing policemen from performing their duties,” he said.

A total of 14 officers and 89 department personnel were involved in the operation, ACP Sarifudin said.
