Polestar O2 Concept EV coupe convertible drone

Aside from the Tesla Roadster, coupe-styled EVs are an extreme rarity in the market. However, there have been plenty of concepts proposed by numerous automakers, with the latest of which is from Geely and Volvo owned car brand Polestar. Known as the Polestar O2, not only is the concept electric vehicle a two-seater with a striking design, it also packs a convertible top.

Oh, and it comes with an integrated aerial drone too.

For many, the thought of featuring a deployable drone on a car can be either downright bizarre, or seriously cool – like in the spy fiction kind of way. But rather for reconnaissance missions, Polestar says the onboard quad-rotored miniature UAV is meant for cinematography. As depicted in the O2’s reveal video, its intended use case is to trail the car and capture cinematic top-down or surround views while you drive around in the countryside and so on.

When unused, the O2’s aerial companion is stored in the car’s back, and is deployed out through an automated rail system before launching away. Polestar did not provide any details regarding the drone but says that it will be autonomous and could achieve speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Unfortunately, not much has been revealed about the O2 either – meaning that its range, speed and so on are unknown. The brand did, however, detail that the EV is the second concept based on the Polestar Precept design language.

The vehicle is said to be built on a “bespoke aluminium platform” to showcase quality and rigidity, while its interior consists of a new thermoplastic mono-material, along with recycled polyester for its seats. Polestar also said that the O2 also sports “disguised design features” that enhances its aerodynamics – such as integrated ducts that “improve laminar air flow over the wheels and body sides”, and rear lights that function as air blades to reduce turbulence behind the car.

Even though the company is building significant hype for its coupe droptop EV concept, do keep in mind that the Polestar O2 – like the Precept – is merely a concept for now. Therefore, there is a possibility that we might not see the company release an identical finalised version of it in the near future, but rather a car that is inspired by the innovations and ideas behind it.
